MR application for promoting Lower Silesia as a tourist destination
Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship
Lower Silesia is an attractive area from an economic perspective. As a region rich in academic, research, and new technology centers, it still attracts new investments, which naturally increases the local number of jobs and companies accepting specialists educated locally. The Marshal’s Office of Lower Silesia sees a promotional potential in this, which it uses in its communication.
Project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund within the Regional Operational Program of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship for the period 2014-2020, and by the Self-government of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship as part of the project „Going Global – Lower Silesian Economic Diplomacy”.
Challenge
Making exploring Lower Silesia more attractive
- While looking for an innovative and progressive way to present the monuments of Lower Silesia to the participants of the World Expo in Dubai, the Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship approached our team with a proposal of cooperation.
- This time, presenting the Lower Silesian Voivodeship required showing it in a completely new version, allowing the recipients greater access to historic buildings. For this purpose, we suggested creating an application with elements made using mixed reality technology. MR means that we can interact with objects projected in our real environment through, for example, special lenses.
- As a team curious about the culture of our region, we decided that learning about the history of this region deserves a modern application. In addition to the educational aspect, the created application would allow users to interact with the monuments actively.
Mixed reality technology makes the experience of learning local stories much more interactive than traditional learning because we can influence the location and shape of the things that appear in front of us.
Palace and monastery complex in 3D technology
By using mixed reality, users stimulate their muscle memory and learn through first-person experiences. This is the key to practical problem-solving training.Intuitive and straightforward user interface
In mixed reality, we only devote our full attention to main topic.

Solution
An immersive experience through exploring monuments recreated using 3D technology
- Thanks to the mixed reality technology, we created an application for the Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, allowing users to see their immediate surroundings and the three-dimensional interactive objects embedded in it. We can rotate, reduce and enlarge them and thus explore them thoroughly.
- We designed high-quality 3D materials that can be displayed in front of us thanks to Microsoft HoloLens 2 hardware. It is a mixed reality device with two main elements: lenses and scanners that map the environment to place application user interface resources nearby.
- In the application, we have placed nine historic buildings of Lower Silesia, i.e., Centennial Hall in Wrocław, Książ Castle, Observatory on Śnieżce, Wang Church in Karpacz, Srebrna Góra Fortress, Museum of Papermaking, Czocha Castle, Palace, and Monastery Complex in Lubiąż, Church of Peace in Jawor.
Technology
Microsoft HoloLens 2
Microsoft HoloLens 2 is a headset device that resembles larger glasses.Holograms are the latest and most advanced technologies used in stimulating solutions. HoloLens 2 allows users not only to see their surroundings but, above all, to view three-dimensional interactive objects embeded in it, which we animate and operate ourselves by using mixed reality technology.Effects
- Success #1 | New technologies promote Lower Silesia around the world
- Success #2 | Intuitive and engaging application
- Success #3 | The feeling of getting to know Lower Silesia in an almost tangible way
